To reach it, you continue east along South Shore Road for a mile to Devil’s Hole Hill and turn left to the Aquarium. Alternatively, take KnaptonHill to Harrington Sound Road and turn right. Both routes offer bus service; the distance is about the same. If you take a bus along South Shore Road you’ll need to catch a number 1; if you go via Knapton Hill, take a number 3. Devil’s Hole Aquarium is the creation of a man named Trott, and it was Bermuda’s first tourist attraction. Trott loved his fish and in 1830 he built a wall around his pond, a natural blue hole, to discourage people from fishing in it. This led to questions as to what he might be hiding behind his new wall. In order to allay any suspicions, he decided to allow people inside the wall to view the pond and, being an astute businessman, he charged admission. They say Devil’s Hole contains more than 400 species of marine life, including giant grouper, turtles and sharks. You can fish in the pond if you like, but you can’t really catch anything; the lines supplied by the staff are baited, but hookless. Still, there’s nothing quite like watching a four- or five-foot shark nibbling at the end of your line; it might be the closest you’ll ever get to catching one. Devil’s Hole is open daily, May through October, from 9 am until 5 pm, and from 10 am until 3 pm, November through April. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.
